About Vinum Hunicum™

Vinum Hunicum™ is a community brand of HunicuM™ community brand group.

The Latin phrase "Vinum Hunicum" can be interpreted as "Wine of the Huns" in English.

Medieaval latin sources (from the 12th century) mention two terms for wine types: "vinum Hunicum" & "vinum Francum".

Different interpretations have emerged over the past centuries. Opinions are divided. These idioms may referred to the quality (lower or higher), to the price (cheap or expensive), to the consumers (folks or aristocracy), to the color (white or red), or only to the wine regions (eastern or western). We emphasize that these interpretations should be handled with care as most of them are pejorative and not proven.

Despite any debates in the past, present and future we are committed that nowadays this phrase must refer to the premium wines with "Hunnic" pedigree.

So, the community brand & label Vinum Hunicum™ is associated with premium quality wines that meet certain criteria regarding "Hunnic" type winery culture.

Participation Criteria

In order to participate in the HunicuM™ community brand group and get the Vinum Hunicum™ seal, the premium quality wines (and wineries) must meet ALL of the following criteria:


  • The location of the wineyards as well as the winery must be in those territories where people with "Hunnic" origin lived or live today.
  • The pedigree of grapevine cultivars must contain at least one "Hunnic" reference genotype based on proven microsatellite marker analysis. We consider "Hunnic" genotypes from the Carpathian basin & mountains, from the Eastern Alps, from the North part of the Black Sea including the Crimea, as well as from the World's most ancient Caucasian wine regions.
  • The premium quality of the wine is approved by professional wine tasters or sommeliers.

Name and logo as well as Author's other work products, the exclusive property of Author, and therefore the international and the Hungarian copyright laws are subject to legal protection as the basis.

Author indicates with ™ (Trademark) letters the composition of Author's intellectual and other products, services and their property to be sold, legally, as a designation without registration. Author also may indicate with ℠ (Service Mark) letters Website's social media services as a designation without registration.

The trademarks, service marks and trade dress of Vinum Hunicum™ and Website (vinumhunicum.com) may not be used or reproduced without prior written approval from Author (or vinumhunicum.com) and may not be used in connection with any product or service that is not affiliated with vinumhunicum.com or Author's name, in any manner that is likely to cause confusion among customers or merchants, in any manner that dilutes the rights of Author, or in any manner that disparages or discredits vinumhunicum.com. Other trademarks that appear on the Website and user interfaces are the property of their respective owners, who may or may not be affiliated with, connected to, or sponsored by vinumhunicum.com or Author.
